National Trade Measurement (www.measurement.gov.au)

The National Measurement Amendment Act 2008 passed through Parliament last year and received Royal assent on 8 December 2008. This Act provides the legislative basis for the Commonwealth, through NMI, to establish and operate a single national system of trade measurement from 1 July 2010.

Trade Measurement Consultation Paper Results now available

On 13 April 2007, following a review of state and territory trade measurement systems, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreed to the introduction of a single national system of trade measurement, administered and funded by the Commonwealth. Commonwealth administration will commence on 1 July 2010 and National Measurement Institute (NMI), a division of the Department of Industry, Innovation Science and Research, will be the responsible agency.

Commencing in September 2008, NMI released the first in a series of three consultation papers in relation to servicing licensing regulation, public weighbridge regulation and trade measurement regulation. The submissions to each of these consultation processes have been summarised and are now available from the NMI website.

Please refer to the NMI website for further updates on the transition to a national system of trade measurement in the coming year www.measurement.gov.au
