Who can Assist with Disputes

There are a number of organisations who have roles in either advising you or handling disputes with those involved in the buying process. The most useful are listed below.

Property Agents Board (formerly Auctioneers & Real Estate Agents Council)
Administers the licensing of agents.  Can hear complaints against agents.

Australian Securities and Investment Commission
Provides information on companies and businesses.  Has powers to prosecute companies for breaches of fair trading laws relating to misrepresentations about financial advice.

Banking and Financial Services Ombudsman (BFSO)
The BFSO is a free and independent dispute resolution service that considers complaints about banks and their affiliates operating in Australia.

Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading
Provides advice to consumers and investigates breaches of fair trading laws.

Housing Industry Association
Provides services to member builders.

Insurance Ombudsman Service (IOS)
National, free, independent service which assists in resolving disputes between consumers and insurers or other financial service providers that are participating companies of the IOS.

Law Society
Regulates the legal profession and provides services to industry.

Legal Aid Commission
Provides independant legal advice.

Legal Ombudsman
Monitors and investigates the handling of complaints by the Law Society.

Master Builders Association
Provides services to member builders.

Ombudsmans Office
Investigates complaints against State government departments, councils and public authorities.

Real Estate Institute of Tasmania
Industry association that provides a variety of services to members.

Recorder of Titles
Strata title disputes.
