Renting a Home

For Tenants

Before making the decision to rent a premise there are some things you should consider. These include for example:

  • Can you afford the rent?
  • If you are sharing with a flat mate and they move out, could you afford the rent on your own?
  • Will you both sign the lease? If one signs and the other does not, the person who has not signed the lease may not have any rights under the agreement.
  • Are you willing to abide by all the conditions of the lease agreement such as ‘no smoking’ and ‘no pets’? If you do not you may be evicted.
  • Do you intend to stay for the full term of the lease? If you leave early you may have to pay the property owner’s expenses for re-letting the property, and you may have to pay rent until a new tenant moves in.
