Business Affairs is often contacted regarding registration for an Australian Business Number (ABN).
The Australian Business Number is issued by the Australian Tax Office through the Australian Business Register and can be accessed at www.abr.business.gov.au.
It is important that you confirm registration of your trading name before applying for your ABN. In the past, business name applicants applied for their ABN around the same time as their business name.
In many cases this did not create a problem. However, in a situation where the first business name listed on an application is unavailable (because the name is already registered by another person), it will be necessary to reapply for the ABN following acknowledgement of the successful registration of a business name.
In the majority of cases it is best to delay applying for your ABN until you have received a business name certificate through the post.
